Truly Simple Scanner: Scan, Search & Keep Your Paperwork

Coming Soon to the App Store

About the App

Truly Simple Scanner turns paper into searchable PDFs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and keeps them where you can find them again. Scan a receipt, a warranty, or a stack of car paperwork, and the app reads the text on your device, so a search for “oil change” or “84.20” finds the right page months later. It’s free for 15 documents, and a single $4.99 purchase unlocks unlimited documents. No subscriptions.

Scanning a page is easy almost anywhere now. Finding it again is the hard part. So every document here can carry tags (Car, Receipts, Taxes) and notes for the things the paper doesn’t say, like the mileage at that repair or which card you paid with. One search covers titles, tags, notes, and every word on every page, and your files stay ordinary PDFs in your own iCloud Drive.

Who It’s For

  • Households: Receipts, warranties, manuals, medical bills, and school forms, tagged and searchable instead of filed and forgotten.
  • Car and home owners: Keep every repair, registration, and service record together under one tag, with notes for the details the receipt leaves out.
  • Freelancers and small businesses: Scan expense receipts as they happen and find them by amount or vendor at tax time.
  • Anyone going paperless: Work through a drawer of paper once, and search it from your phone, tablet, or Mac from then on.

Features

  • Clean scans: Uses Apple’s document camera to find page edges, straighten them, and capture multi-page documents, with color, grayscale, or black-and-white output. On Mac, scan with your iPhone or iPad through Continuity Camera.
  • Searchable PDFs, automatically: Text recognition runs on your device and adds an invisible text layer to every page, so your PDFs stay searchable and copyable in Preview, Files, and other apps.
  • Tags and notes: Tag a document Receipts or Car, and add notes for anything the paper doesn’t say. Browse a tag in the sidebar to see everything it holds.
  • One search for everything: Titles, tags, notes, and the words inside your documents. Open a result and every match is highlighted on the page.
  • Find in a document: Search within a long PDF and step through the matches (⌘F on Mac and iPad keyboards).
  • Found from anywhere: Documents appear in Spotlight search on your device, so you can find a receipt without opening the app.
  • Suggested titles: The app suggests a title from the text on the first page, so “Scan 14” becomes “Brake Repair.”
  • Page editing: Reorder, rotate, and delete pages; insert pages from a new scan, a file, or another document; and save selected pages as a new PDF.
  • Bring in what you have: Import PDFs and images from Files, the share sheet, or drag and drop, and combine several into one PDF or keep them separate.
  • Export your way: Share, save, or print as a PDF (with adjustable compression and optional password), plain text, or one PNG or JPG per page.
  • Private device sync: Your library syncs through your own iCloud across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and your PDFs appear in the Files app. No account, no server, and it works offline.
  • Quick to reach: A Scan Document control for Control Center, the Lock Screen, or the Action button, plus a Siri shortcut.
  • Native and accessible: Built for Apple devices with VoiceOver, Dynamic Type, keyboard shortcuts and menus on Mac, and light and dark modes.
  • Pay once, keep forever: Every tool is free for up to 15 documents. Unlock unlimited documents with a one-time, lifetime in-app purchase, shared with your family. No subscriptions, no ads, no hidden fees.

How to Make a Searchable PDF

  1. Tap Scan Document and hold your phone over the page. The camera finds the edges and captures it; keep going for multi-page documents.
  2. Choose color, grayscale, or black and white, then save. The app starts reading the text right away, on your device.
  3. Accept the suggested title, or type your own, and add a tag or two.
  4. Add a note for anything worth remembering that isn’t on the page.
  5. Search any time by title, tag, note, or a word or number from the page itself.

Tips & More Info

  • Search for amounts and reference numbers, not just words. A total like 84.20 or an order number is often the fastest way back to a receipt.
  • Use notes for what the paper leaves out: the mileage at a repair, who you spoke to, or the date you mailed a form.
  • If a document was recognized in the wrong language, set the language in Settings, then open the document and choose Recognize Text Again.
  • Your PDFs live in iCloud Drive, in the app’s folder, so they open in Files and Preview like any other PDF, and they stay searchable there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the app free?
Yes. Every tool is free, including scanning, text recognition, tags and notes, page editing, and export, for up to 15 documents. Unlimited documents is a one-time, lifetime $4.99 in-app purchase, shared with your family. There’s no subscription.
When will it be available?
Soon. The app is finishing up App Store review, and this page will link to it on the App Store as soon as it’s live.
What is a searchable PDF?
A PDF with an invisible layer of text behind the page image. The page looks exactly like your scan, but you can search it, select and copy its words, and find it by its contents. The app adds this layer to every scan automatically, using text recognition on your device, and the PDFs stay searchable in Preview, Files, and other apps.
How is this different from scanning in Notes or Files?
Notes and Files can scan a page. Truly Simple Scanner is built around finding it again: every scan becomes a searchable PDF, every document can have tags and notes, and one search covers titles, tags, notes, and the words inside every page. It also edits pages, compresses and password-protects exports, and keeps everything in one library across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Is text recognition done on my device?
Yes. Text recognition runs entirely on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Your documents are never uploaded to a server for processing.
Can I scan on a Mac?
Yes, with Continuity Camera: scan with your iPhone or iPad and the pages arrive in the Mac app. You can also import PDFs and images on any device.
Where are my documents stored?
As ordinary PDF files in your own iCloud Drive, so they sync across your devices and appear in the Files app. If you’re not signed in to iCloud, they stay on the device. There’s no account, no server, and no tracking.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later, and Mac with macOS 15 or later. One purchase covers all three.
How do I report a bug or request a feature?
Reach out via one of the options on the contact page.
